Design and Synthesis of Multitopic Terpyridine Ligand for Pre-assembly and Post-Assembly Functionalization of Supramolecular Ring-in-Ring Structure

The property of metallo-supramolecules can be tailored through either pre-assembly or post-assembly modification. Here we use a supramolecular ring-in-ring structure as an example to describe our strategy. A double-layered pyridinium salts-based tetraterpyridine ligand bearing 120o angle was designed and synthesized through condensation reactions of pyrylium salts with corresponding primary amine derivative. For the first time, we were able to introduce terminal alkyne group into this tetratopic ligand, which will serve as a universal build for the following functionalization through either pre-assembly or post-assembly modification. Instead of preparing each ligand with different modification, such universal ligand will greatly simplify the ligand synthesis. Therefore, it is expected that we can assemble a series of ring-in-ring structure, or concentric hexagons with a broad array of functionality.
