Abstract

A new architecture of coordination polymer particles, concentration gradient Prussian blue analogues, is introduced. The system chosen for the study is a gradient between single phase of KCo[Fe(CN)6] at the core and KNi[Fe(CN)6] at the surface with the divalent metal cobalt and nickel occupancy changing within the particle. Synthetic strategies and experimental conditions such as temperature, addition rate, and reaction time are studied to find conditions under which uniform gradient particles can be reproducibly synthesized. The particles are characterized using powder X-ray diffraction, high resolution transmission electron microscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The concentration gradient particles are compared to single phase and core-shell heterostructure particles.
